Forehand vs. Backhand in Pickleball

Every shot in pickleball, whether it’s a dink, drop, drive, volley, or overhead, is either a forehand or a backhand. In this video, we break down the fundamentals of forehands vs. backhands so you can better understand the differences and apply them to every shot in your game. Forehands are hit on your dominant side. If you’re a right-handed player, that’s your right side; if you’re left-handed, it’s your left. At contact, your palm is facing toward the other side of the court, helping generate control and power. Backhands are hit on your non-dominant side. For right-handed players, that’s the left side of your body, and for left-handed players, it’s the right. On a backhand, the back of your hand faces toward the other side of the court at contact. Understanding which side of your body you’re using and how your hand is positioned applies to every shot you hit, from soft dinks to powerful drives.
