The PPA Tour's biggest Australian event delivered five champions, several impressive performances from local players, and another reminder of pickleball's growing international reach.

The 2026 WALKER Australia Pickleball Cup wrapped up Sunday at the Queensland Tennis Centre in Brisbane, with some familiar names taking home gold and several Australian players making their presence felt.

Hunter Johnson captured men's singles gold, Andie Dikosavljevic gave the home crowd a women's singles champion, and Gabe Tardio and Tyra Black each left Brisbane with two gold medals.

Here are the biggest storylines from an eventful week Down Under.

Top Storylines

1. Hunter Johnson Adds Another Singles Title to His Collection

Hunter Johnson continues to establish himself as one of the most dangerous singles players on the PPA Tour.

The top seed navigated a competitive men's singles bracket before defeating Christian Alshon in Sunday's championship match, 11-8, 5-11, 11-8.

Johnson's path to the final included straight-game victories over Kyle Stoker, Daiki Tanabe, Hong Kit Wong, and Grayson Goldin.

His semifinal victory over Goldin was particularly impressive, as Johnson earned an 11-9, 11-3 win to set up the showdown with Alshon.

Alshon presented a much tougher challenge in the final, forcing a deciding third game after splitting the first two.

Johnson ultimately prevailed, adding another significant championship to his 2026 resume.

The victory also continued an impressive stretch for Johnson, who defeated Ben Johns in straight games at the Las Vegas Open earlier this month.

2. Gabe Tardio and Tyra Black Leave Australia With Two Gold Medals Each

It was a particularly successful trip to Australia for Gabe Tardio and Tyra Black.

The pair teamed up in mixed doubles and defeated Christian Alshon and Parris Todd in a three-game final, 7-11, 11-6, 11-7.

Their path to the championship included victories over Dylan Frazier/Kaitlyn Christian and the sibling duo of JW Johnson/Jorja Johnson.

But neither player was finished collecting hardware.

Tardio partnered with Hayden Patriquin in men's doubles, overcoming a slow start against JW Johnson and Tama Shimabukuro to win the championship 3-11, 11-6, 11-7.

The top seeds had previously defeated Connor Garnett and Dylan Frazier 11-5, 11-9 in the semifinals.

Meanwhile, Black partnered with Jorja Johnson to claim women's doubles gold over Parris Todd and Australian Danni-Elle Townsend (two former teammates on the Columbus Sliders of MLP).

Two players, four total gold medals, and one very successful trip to Brisbane.

The results also demonstrated Tardio's versatility. Already established as one of the elite men's doubles players in the world, he added another mixed doubles title to his resume.

3. Andie Dikosavljevic Delivers a Home-Country Championship

One of the best stories of the tournament belonged to Australian Andie Dikosavljevic.

The Brisbane resident defeated Judit Castillo 11-6, 11-6 in the women's singles final, giving the home crowd plenty to celebrate.

Dikosavljevic, a former collegiate tennis standout at Auburn University, has quickly developed into one of Australia's strongest professional pickleball players.

Her semifinal victory over fellow Australian Sahra Dennehy was arguably one of the most dramatic matches of the tournament.

After dropping the first game 11-5, Dikosavljevic responded with an 11-1 second game before surviving a 12-10 deciding game.

She carried that momentum into Sunday's championship, where she defeated Castillo in straight games.

For a player competing in her home city against a field that featured several established American professionals, the championship was particularly meaningful.

It also provided another example of how quickly the standard of professional pickleball is improving outside the United States.

4. Hayden Patriquin and Gabe Tardio Prove Their Doubles Chemistry

With Ben Johns absent from the Australian tournament, Gabe Tardio joined forces with Hayden Patriquin as the top seeds in men's doubles.

The St. Louis Shock partnership certainly delivered.

After cruising through their first three matches, Tardio and Patriquin defeated Dylan Frazier and Connor Garnett in the semifinals to reach Sunday's championship match.

Waiting for them were JW Johnson and Tama Shimabukuro, who had defeated George Wall and Joey Wild in their semifinal.

Johnson and Shimabukuro came out firing, taking the opening game 11-3.

But Tardio and Patriquin responded with consecutive victories of 11-6 and 11-7 to secure the gold medal.

It was an impressive result for a pairing competing in a field featuring several intriguing new combinations.

5. Australian Players Show They Belong on a Bigger Stage

While several established American professionals collected the gold medals, Australian players produced some of the tournament's most memorable performances.

Dikosavljevic's singles championship was the obvious highlight, but she wasn't the only Australian making noise.

Sahra Dennehy reached the women's singles semifinals before falling to Dikosavljevic in a dramatic three-game match.

Danni-Elle Townsend reached the women's doubles final alongside Parris Todd, eventually earning silver against Tyra Black and Jorja Johnson.

On the men's side, Harrison Brown made his mark with an 11-6, 11-4 victory over Zane Navratil in singles before eventually falling to Grayson Goldin.

For Australian pickleball, these performances matter.

The tournament wasn't simply an opportunity to watch some of the biggest names from the United States compete. It gave emerging players from Australia and the surrounding region a chance to measure themselves against established professionals.

And several proved they are more than capable of competing.

Other Notable Storylines

Dylan Frazier Falls Early in Singles

One of the biggest early upsets came when Liam Lamb defeated Dylan Frazier 11-8, 11-4 in men's singles. Frazier recovered to make a semifinal appearance in men's doubles with Connor Garnett.

Christian Alshon Reaches Two Championship Matches

Alshon put together another strong week, reaching the men's singles final against Hunter Johnson and the mixed doubles final alongside Parris Todd. He finished with two silver medals.

Final Thoughts

The Australia Pickleball Cup was about more than the five gold medals handed out Sunday.

With a record Australian prize purse, a significant collection of international talent, and several strong performances from local players, the event represented another important step in the PPA Tour's international expansion.

The established professionals largely delivered, but the performances of Dikosavljevic, Dennehy, Townsend, and others demonstrated that the talent gap between the United States and emerging international markets is worth watching.

For the PPA Tour, bringing this level of competition to Australia is an important investment in pickleball's future.
