The APP New York City Open took place over Memorial Day weekend in 2025. The action took place from Wednesday, May 21, through Championship Saturday, May 24.

The biggest issue was the weather in the Big Apple. Rain caused the tournament to play Wednesday and Thursday at the Queens College indoor tennis center. No streaming was available.

However, play continued at the Billie Jean USTA National Training Center on Friday, with intermittent scattered showers.

Championship Saturday proved to be the best day in terms of play and weather.

Let’s get into the action.

Sofia Sewing started off Championship Saturday with a bang

Sewing won her fourth championship in 2025. Six months ago, Sewing was going through qualifying, and now she has earned herself the #1 seed on the APP Tour.

Sewing won four matches to bring down her fourth title. She only lost one game out of the nine she played. In the final, Sewing beat first time medalist Nicole Eugenio, 15-12, 16-14.

Since this was a major, this will earn Sewing 1.5x the normal APP points, which should lock her in the #1 seed for the foreseeable future.

Men’s doubles didn’t disappoint

Jack Munro has won gold in every single APP event on tour in 2025. This one was a little unusual, because he usually partners with Will Howells. Howells was busy playing in Major League Pickleball this weekend, which gave Munro the opportunity to partner with someone new.

Munro partnered with Aiden Schenk, a current member of the APP U.S. National Team. The 19-year-old and 20-year-old Munro teamed up to take the gold medal from qualifiers, Thomas Yu, and Len Yang. Yu and Lang had to win seven matches, including three in qualifying, to make the finals.

In the final, Yu and Lang won the first game, 11-4. However, Munro and Schenk dug deep, winning game two and three, 11-5, 11-7. This was Munro’s first of two gold medals at the event.

Fudge and Munro earned their second gold in mixed doubles in 2025

Fudge and Munro won APP Daytona earlier in the year, and now have added a second gold to their coffers. Their four matches were tightly contested, with three of them reaching game three.

The other? The semifinals, against Richard Livornese and Riley Bohnert, was 12-10, 11-9. Two game matches don’t get closer than that one.

The finals is a match worth re-watching. Chris Haworth and Amanda Hendry have been making steady improvements throughout the year, and they came to play. The match, of course, went to three games.

Fudge and Munro were able to win 11-7, 8-11, 11-8.

Oshiro and Harris won their first tournament playing together

The #1 seed, Braverman and Fudge, were upset in the semis, by Bobbi Oshiro and Allison Harris, 11-8, 11-6.

On the other side of the bracket, #2 seed, Yana Newell and Emily Cederquist had to claw and scrap their way to the finals. In the quarters, they beat Sofia Sewing and Shelby Bates, 11-9, in the third. In the semis, they beat Simone Jardim and Christine Maddox, 11-6, in the third.

In the finals, Oshiro and Harris were just too much for Newell and Cederquist. Despite this being their first time pairing up, Oshiro and Harris won 11-2, 11-9.

Armaan Bhatia won 27-25 in a crazy final

In the last match of the day, two entertainers entertained. Men’s singles was the story of upsets. To set the stage, here are a few upsets that happened:

  • QF - Ronan Camron upset #2 seed, Grayson Goldin, with Goldin having to retire due to injury
  • SF - Armaan Bhatia beat Camron, 16-14, 15-11
  • SF - Alex Crum upset #1 seed, Chris Haworth, 15-13, 18-16

In the final, Bhatia beat Crum 15-10 in the first game. In the second game, Bhatia won the craziest singles game I have ever seen, 27-25. Reminder, the APP plays singles to 15, rally scoring, win by two. So these two went back and forth for 22 extra points until Bhatia was able to prevail.

Bhatia earned his second medal on the APP Tour this year, and his first gold.
