Mastering the ATP: It’s Easier Than You Think

The “around the post” shot, or ATP, used to be a rare move—especially in the women’s game. I remember when I started playing, it was almost never used. Now, it’s a staple. And honestly, it’s not as difficult as people think.

Here are my top three tips to help you start hitting ATPs with confidence:

1. Turn Toward the Ball

This is the number one thing most players miss. Too often, I see players just sliding sideways, staying square to the court. Instead, turn your toes toward the ball. That turn creates forward motion, which helps you move into the shot and through the ball. We’re not just chasing wide balls—we’re setting up to drive them with intention.

2. Be Patient

Timing is everything. Most players either rush the shot or wait too long. When you’re practicing, let the ball bounce twice. That’s right—twice. Don’t worry if it goes through sometimes. The point is to get comfortable letting the ball clear the post.

Forget about trying to hit it at the perfect height. You don’t need to overcomplicate it. Just make sure the ball passes outside the net post. Once that’s happening, the shot will start to click.

3. Let It Rip

This surprises people—but I want you to let it go. Stay relaxed. For right-handed players hitting the forehand ATP, let that paddle tip wrap naturally around the outside of the ball. Loose grip. Relaxed arm. Let the paddle do the work.

Grab a few balls, focus on turning toward the ball, step through it, and feel that natural wrap around the post. With a little practice, you’ll start hitting clean ATPs—and having a lot more fun doing it.
